Our 9th Annual Open House On Saturday, April 10th, we held our 9th Annual Open House. More than 1200 visitors passed through our front door. Balloons and streamers decorated our main greenhouse. The air was filled with the sounds of The Bob Clay Quartet. Visitors enjoyed wine poured by Seven Valleys Vineyards and hot snacks by Messinas' Pizza. The nursery and greenhouses were freshly stocked with hundreds of varieties of shrubs, trees and perennials. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather and the fragrance of the early spring blooms. We look forward to seeing you again next year, and welcome all newcomers. Biological Integrated Insect Control - Updated In early spring we introduced beneficial insects in our Greenhouses. We are happy to report that the ladybugs, lacewing and trichogramma have more than met our expectations. Thanks to their hearty appetites, we have been able to control the whitefly and aphid population. Here at John Shelley's Garden Center we have decided to take a natural approach for the control of unwanted insects in our Greenhouses. Kunafin, a family owned business from Texas, is supplying the insects. Beat the Heat With Drought-Resistant Plants Last summer's long drought and oppressive heat proved the value of drought- resistant plants in your garden. Little or no watering is the main virtue; with consistent blooms coming in second. Achillea (Yarrow, in a variety of colors), Artemesia (four varieties), Butterfly bushes (Buddleia, is many colors), Sedums (hundreds of varieties), Hardy Cactus (60 varieties to date), Rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susan and Gloriosa Daisy), Echinacea (Cone flowers in pink, purple and white), Thyme (dozens of possibilities here), Lavendula (at least 6 varieties), bamboo and ornamental grasses (several dozen available), and sevaral dozen other varieties can be found in Greenhouses 3 and 4. Enjoy them all! |
