Community Philanthropy
After establishing, living and working in any community, I believe that it becomes the inherent duty of any corporation or business to "give back" to that community some proportional measure of support, often termed "charity" or "donations".
While the end-result is the same, the delivery mechanism can take many forms. Rather than simply filling-out a blasé paper, donation form, and simply writing a check, we prefer to donate "in-kind". Instant effect, immediate gratiication. We also donate JSGC&N "Gift Certificates", on many occasions, depending upon the function.
Since 1990, when I founded the company, I have engaged in extensive donations, too numerous to rcall and mention. Only I, my CPA and the IRS knows who they are, and what I donated. I perfer to keep it that way. I don't need, want or seek acknowledgement for my largésse; I simply do it and help make things better for that specific organization. The following are just a recent few of the ones we've helped-out, over the past 18 years, in our community service area.

Olivia's House

We donated two $500 JSGC&N Gift Certificates for their "Gala Auction" Event, at the York Country Club, On March 29th. Then, we designed and landscaped the front of their existing building, and their newly-purchased adjacent office building, at 826 N. George Street, in York, PA.
Leslie Delp, Executive Director, continues to sing our praises, but we prefer to quietly continue helping them, anyway we can, in their irreplaceable mission, in the York Community. "Thank you, Olivia's House, for what you do". And York (PA) thanks you, profusely, as well.

Eagle Scout Projects.

Over the years, we've contributed countless hours and dollars to young, local Eagle Scout Candidates, in the Boy Scouts of America, to help the final leg of their Eagle Scout Project, towards completion and their award ceremony.
On November 20th, 1963, at the age of 12, I ascended to the Eagle Scout Rank, and still proudly carry my original, worn card in my wallet. So I feel an obligation to any and all Boy Scouts, who aspire to that "hallowed rank".

Local Community Churches.

Although I am a very spiritual person, I was not always a organized-religion, church-oriented individual. But as the years have passed, I have begun "looking for a church to hang my hat, in". Over the years, I've both donated and discounted many trees and numerous landscaping projects to local churches and people, who have established "Memorial Trees" for passed-on, loved ones.
Recently, we've re-landscaped the front of Rev Tom Shelley's (my Dad's cousin) Zion (Shaffer's) United Luthern Church, in Seven Valleys (PA). We still have a committment to Rev Tom, for a "picnic tree grove", possibly this or next Fall. I will also add-in some American Elm (Ulmus Americana) seedlings, to help re-populate the Southern York County (PA)/ Northern Baltimore-Harford Counties (MD) with Elms. I grew-up with American Elms on my Mom & Dad's property, in Arlington Heights (ILL), back in the late 50s and early-60s. It's a true pleasure to "give back" to the region, IMO.

Penn State, York Campus.

Several years ago, I donated 52 high-quality cultivar/hybrid trees of 5"-plus caliper (diameter), to the new PSU-York Cazmpus to repopulate their newly-established campus, to outlast the junk/scub trees, left there by the local excavator/builder. My Dad's a
PSU Alumnus, and I did the "gratis job", in his name and PSU Prsident, Graham Spanier, responded witha very nice, personally-signed 'Thank You" letter, to Dad.
We also landscaped the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center, at their request.

Blue Star Memorial Garden.

The York Garden Club asked us to donate a boulder to their new Blue Star Memorial Garden, to fallen US Soldiers, in the new York Revolution Baseball Stadium. We readily agreed, and asked what else we could do to help with their project.
They've asked for costs for one of our Irregular Flagstone Walks and for a Hand-Cut, Faced & Stacked Stone Wall, in their new Blue Star Memorial Garden area, scheduled for completion and dedication in 2009.

Local Community Organizations.

All kinds of school projects, fire companies, Lion's Clubs, Veterans Organizations, local raffles, church bingo, fund raiser BBQs, marathon runs, walks for this and for that, telethons, radio-thons, senior proms, classroom projects, safety calendars... the list is beyond huge, have benefitted from our donations to their causes. And we're happy to have helped.
