Grower Talks Magazine January 2007 Making Money On The InterNet: Tips For Successful Web Profits Total InterNet commerce is expected to generate $35 billion in sales by the year 2000. Here's the first part in our series for growers who want a piece of the action. by Douglas C. Green Let's be clear right from the start, the vast majority of the 375 million Websites out there don't make money. While Yahoo has declared a small profit, most Internet stars such as Amazon.com or Netscape have yet to show a penny of profit; instead, they're sink holes into which investors are pouring incredible amounts of money. However, profits are possible. John Shelley, of John Shelley's garden Center & Nursery, Felton, Pennsylvania, in a speech to the Southeast Greenhouse Conference and Trade Show (SGCTS) said, "In '96, I did $86,300 from Internet business. In '97, just over $136,000 came in as a direct result of the Website. This year, we'll probably do close to $200,000 in additional business. Roughly 80% of these figures are from landscape contracting, 15% from retail sales, and 5% walk-in from both out-of-state people 'finding' us and coming to visit. I'm still amazed, as I sit and go over the day's requests, just how many people are from somewhere else want our expertise, based upon what they've experienced at my corporate site, www.gdnctr.com."
