The eastern cactus, covering much of the eastern US (east of the Mississippi), has dark green pads and is usually also spineless. It blossoms yellow, sometimes with a red center. (5) Opuntia phaeacantha $16.99 This is a much larger variety with pads 12-16" long and 4-8" wide. It's blossoms are a light salmon color. The blossoms form a fruit that turns bright red in the Fall. One of the last cacti to bloom, usually in late June. Other Opuntia Varieties Including Cholla (20) Opuntia imbricata in display garden $9.99 A hardy Cholla from the eastern slopes of The Rocky Mountains. The blossoms are magenta. (21) Opuntia kleiniae $8.99 A Cholla which grows more like a bush. The blossoms are violet. (22) Opuntia davisii $7.99 (23) Opuntia whipplei (24) Opuntia clavata in display garden Ball Cactus (40) Escobaria vivipara v vivpara in display garden $10.99 A pretty barrel-type cactus which is 1-4" tall and 2-5" wide. Flowers are pink with a yellow center. After blooming, green fruits are produced. Very hardy. (41) Escobaria vivipara v arizonica This plant is found in central Utah at the 7200ft elevation level. The blossoms are pinks and it's extremely hardy. (42) Escobaria missouriensis This is an extremely hardy cactus growing in central Montana. Flowers are light brown to straw yellow. The flowers form red fruits after the spring bloom. (43) Pediocactus simpsonii A small barrel cactus which grows in the mountains of Utah and Idaho. This is the first cactus to bloom, about mid-April. The blossoms are pink. Barrel Cactus (60) Echinocereus triglochidiatus v melanacanthus in display garden This cactus is native to northern Utah. The barrels are 4-5" tall and will clump to several feet wide with age. Blossoms are red. Spines are white and numerous. It is sometimes called the 'claret cup' cactus. (61) Echinocereus viridiflorus in display garden This is a small, hardy plant from the eastern slopes of The Rockies. The spines are red and the blossoms are chartruese. (62) Echinocereus baileyi in display garden An outstanding barrel cactus from Oklahoma which grows 8" tall. It has shaggy spines which are either white or either rust color. The large blossoms are light pink. (63) Echinocereus chloranthus in display garden Agave (100) Agave utahensis v utahensis in display garden This plant grows further north than any other agave and is found in the mountains of southern Utah.
