This is a short list of selected cacti and other succulents that have proven to be reliably- hardy in the Northeast USA, specifically USDA Zone 6. Highlighted entries indicate items for sale on this bench. Entries marked in display garden Are available for viewing along the front steps display garden. Pads Prickly Pear (Opuntia varieties) (1) Opuntia polyacantha in display garden $8.99 This variety makes a very beautiful garden plant. The pads are 4-6" long with white spines covering the entire pad. Blossoms are pink and 2-3" wide and grow into clumps 2-4' wide. It flowers in mid-May. (1a) Opuntia polycantha var 'Claude Arno' $9.99 A choice form of Polyacantha, suitable for troughs and small gardens. Attractive red flowers. (2) Opuntia basilaris var aurea $8.99 This is the northern form of the 'beaver-tail' cactus. The pads are bluish and spineless. The blossoms are pink and large. (3) Opuntia fragilis $5.99 This is a small cactus that resembles a Cholla. The joints are 1-4" long, but will clump to 2-3' wide with age.
